Your carpets need to be vacuumed at least once a week and more often in heavy traffic areas. Vacuuming frequently will extend the the life of your carpet as it prevents buildup of gritty particles that actually cut carpet fibers.
You should also make a point every few weeks to take a little more time and use your vacuum’s crevice tool to clean around baseboards, radiators other hard-to-reach places.

When you vacuum wall-to-wall carpeting you should divide the floor into sections and thoroughly vacuum an entire section before moving on to the next. Be sure and take your time when you vacuum your carpets, especially plush carpet which traps more dirt in its deep pile. Just one pass with a high-powered upright vacuum is not nearly enough. Be sure and go over each section of carpet several times. Work slowly to allow the suction to remove all the ground-in dust and dirt.

You need to pay extra attention to areas where people sit and move their feet. Use a criss-cross pattern to vacuum these areas of heavy traffic, and use overlapping strokes. Add baking soda to the bag in your vacuum to fight odors.
